Your Career Setting Goals
Developing the Next Generation of Rainmakers Your Career: Setting Goals I recently read a very helpful blog post: 5 Reasons Why You Should Commit Your Goals to Writing, posted by a blogger you should read: Michael Hyatt. I urge you to read the 5 reasons. The blog reminded me of a blog I posted four years ago and I wanted to share it with you again. I have set goals since childhood. When I was young, I set goals related to my sports activities, such as free throw percentage in basketball, strike outs and earned run average in baseball, and average yards per carry in football. When I started law school, my goal was to finish in the top five of my class. When I became a lawyer, my first goals centered on what I wanted to learn and what I wanted to experience. I remember one year I wanted to have five jury trials. Even though I did not have five jury trials that year, having goals motivated me, stretched me and forced me to prioritize my activities. Because I owe so much of my success and career satisfaction to setting goals and working to achieve them, I struggled when I learned many, if not most, associates do not set goals or have career development plans. Naively, I assumed all associates would enjoy setting goals, having a plan and working to achieve them. Setting goals is a difficult process. To set goals, an associate must focus on something other than doing billable work. To quote John Lennonâ Life is what happens while you are busy making other plans.â For lawyers that means doing billable work. To set goals you must be willing to look inside and determine what you really want. Thatâs tough to do. Many associates are uncomfortable looking within themselves. They know how to please others â" parents, teachers, law professors, bar examiners and partners, but do not know what they really want. Sitting down and writing out what they want to achieve in the short-term as well as the long-term is daunting and often leads to a feeling of helplessness. Achieving goals requires a commitment of time and energy, and willingness to take a risk. Yet, taking a risk can make your career way more enjoyable. I know that has been the case for me. I also know that the feeling of having more control over your future can make the commitment of time and energy well worth it. If you are a regular reader, you know that I have written many times about how to actually achieve the goals you set. One way is to hold yourself accountable. I practiced law for 37 years developing a national construction law practice representing some of the top highway and transportation construction contractors in the US.

Why Writing Retail on a Resume is Important?
Why Writing Retail on a Resume is Important? One of the biggest misconceptions is the belief that you have to write retail on a resume all the time. And if you do, then you have to put in your entire experience as a retail employee and this includes anything that is not business related. Here are some things to consider when writing retail on a resume. If you are the type of person who has a lot of experience in the home but very little business experience, you might want to take the time to find yourself a job at a discount department store and work your way up the career ladder. By doing this, you will be able to list your home-based experience with a retail store. You might even be the kind of person who would like to be an engineer, or even a fireman. If this is the case, then you might want to write your experience as a firefighter or engineer. You should also note that writing retail on a resume is just as important if you want to have a career in sales. Writing sales resume might seem like a daunting task, but it is actually one of the easiest. Sales people should not be listed under 'staff.' This is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to writing sales on a resume. You can include any jobs that you may have done, which would include a variety of positions in sales such as: cashier, stock clerk, front office manager, cashier, customer service representative, etc.The number one mistake that people make when it comes to writing retail on a resume is under listing their work experience. They will only list the minimum number of hours they have worked at each position they have held and therefore do not get any experience. When you read the whole list, the very first position listed on your resume is the one you want to emphasize the most, because you will be the first one listed in the business. When people start out in certain positions, they will only work with the minimum number of hours required. If you are still learning about the business, then you s hould be listed under 'learner' when listing your hours worked. However, there are other reasons why you might want to do this.Be careful to take the information that is being listed on your resume and make sure that the numbers are correct. It is always better to make your resume a work in progress rather than starting out in the position that does not need as much work. In this way, you will be able to learn the business and work your way up. You should never be trying to sell yourself on the first line on your resume. If you are going to have a major retail business, then you should definitely include a section on your resume where you state your sales for the year. Remember that writing retail on a resume is the process of promoting yourself. While you should always look at your resume every day to make sure that it is professional, there are times when you can just sit down and relax and enjoy yourself. If you find that you have written a bad or incomplete resume, you should wri te your name and all your contact information and post it somewhere to the public.Do not hesitate to ask someone to help you on the sales portion of your resume. Some people will be glad to help and it could save you from hiring someone else to do the writing for you.
